Underbelly described them as “Cornwall’s finest dub reggae band”.

New Penzance Acoustic Compilation

“Penzance Calling”, a compilation CD of 16 artists based in Penzance has been released. The album was produced by Dare Mason at the VIP Lounge. The artists were chosen by Taff Thomas who manages the Farmers Arms, the premier venue for acoustic artists in the area. In Dare’s words, “Anyone who is familiar with the local music scene will have noticed the proliferation of acoustic based artists – in the streets, in the bars, at open mic sessions. I decided it would be fun to document this period by recording a selection of local musicians to showcase their talent. The Farmers Arms is the perfect partner for this project because, along with the Studio Bar, they are the main music venue in Penzance.”

The tracks on the CD, despite being acoustic, are tremendously varied, ranging from a banjo-led sea shanty by Tom Dale, through to a sultry reggae tune by Hannah Johnson. In between there are blues songs, protest songs, ballads and even a rock song! The CD’s are on sale at the Farmers Arms and cost £10. If you can’t make it to the Farmers, you can make a Paypal payment of £10 to dare.mason@sky.com – just let us know it’s for the Penzance Calling CD.

Penzance CallingAll proceeds go to Cornwall Air Ambulance.

Dare Mason mixes new Hollie Rogers album

Hollie’s first album “Let Me Be the Shadow of Your Dog” was mixed by Dare in 2008 and was a successful debut for this talented young songwriter who Nick Mason of Pink Floyd described as “having an amazing voice reminiscent of Joni Mitchell”. She has supported artists such as Suzanne Vega and Midge Ure and can even number Damien Rice among her fans. Her new album, “All That Fire” is even better – more mature, more cohesive. Check out the lead track, Hollie Rogers 1“Skin”.
