Kusini Camp is the only permanent tented camp in the southern Serengeti.
Perfectly sited in a cluster of kopjes, Sanctuary Kusini’s twelve spacious tents blend seamlessly into the predator-rich plains of the Serengeti.

Part of Sanctuary Kusini's charm is its remote and private location within the park, offering exceptional and essentially private game viewing. Built around a spectacular rocky outcrop, or kopje, the camp's communal areas include a dining area, lounge and library, as well as a campfire. The views from the kopje are simply sensational - the perfect spot for sundowners and stargazing. The library is stocked with reference books to read up on the day's discoveries, and of course, our experienced guides are always on hand to fill in about local knowledge where books cannot. Like all Sanctuary properties, Sanctuary Kusini is designed to have minimal environmental impact, in fact the camp can be packed up and removed without leaving a trace.

The open-plan en-suite twelve tents at Sanctuary Kusini are shaded from the sun by acacia trees and all are extremely spacious. Nestled in amongst the woodland, each tent has carefully thought-out views of the bush making it the perfect hideaway for casual game viewing. Each tent features mosquito netting, hairdryers and in-room safe. A large private wooden veranda with comfortable furnishings extends in front of each tent, with many having views of the plains below where zebra, buffalo and lion are a common sight, the ideal spot to relax for a sundowner after a hot restorative shower.
Sanctuary Kusini prides itself in the personalised service we are able to offer our guests. Please let us know if you have any special requests or dietary requirements.
From bush breakfasts, private picnics, sundowners on a kopje and three course dinners - Sanctuary Kusini offers an experience in seclusion.

Your personal tent attendant will let you know it's time to wake up while offering a fresh cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate - just the way you like it! A full English and continental breakfast is served in the main area before departing for your morning game viewing activity. A fresh plated three course lunch can be served back in camp or alternatively if you prefer to spend more time in the bush we could arrange a special bush picnic basket packed with a choice of delicious cold meals. Your guide will be able to find the best possible shady spot where you will be able to get out of the vehicle and enjoy a private lunch in the middle of the bush.

Once back at the camp you are encouraged to climb to the top of the main kopje just behind the main area to view the breathtaking scenery. The views from the kopje are simply sensational - the perfect spot for cocktails and snacks. This is definitely one of the camp's more special moments as you take a moment to enjoy and appreciate an African sunset.
If you are celebrating a special occasion we could arrange special private sundowners and special dinners upon request.

Sanctuary Kusini is one of the great places in the world to see large predators - lion, cheetah and even the elusive leopard can be seen lying in the kopjes nearby camp. Between January and March the great migration returns and wildebeest and zebra cover the plains as they give birth to their young. The treeless plains in this area provide the perfect habitat for cheetah who have made his area of the park their permanent home. Our experienced guides know every inch of the territory around the camp and this remote corner of the vast eco-system never disappoints - buffalo, elephant, hyena and giraffe, all can be seen close to the camp. There are no other permanent camps round here so adventurous travellers can be sure of unobstructed viewing from our customised safari vehicles. Bird life is particularly good on the forest edge where woodpeckers and brightly coloured kingfishers can often be seen.

Put on your walking shoes and experience the beautiful Serengeti from a different perspective on a walking safari at Sanctuary Kusini. With our professional walking guide and armed ranger, guests can now explore the grassland around camp. Our qualified guide has a wealth of knowledge and will explain how to understand animal behaviour while tracking a variety of game. You may encounter zebra, waterbuck, impala, ostrich, elephant as well as a number of birds. (Maximum 6 people per walk, additional cost).

Most visitors come to Africa looking for the wildlife and the beauty, yet one of the most spectacular sights of all is hardly ever mentioned - the African night sky, offering some of the best star gazing in the world. In the evening, sit on a comfortable cushion up on top of the main kopje or around the campfire and allow the camp manager to uncover the universe. With a green laser pointer to show you the way, embark on a walk through the stars where you can look back millions of years in time and get lost in the beauty of the night sky. Weather conditions and moon phases must be taken into consideration when planning your perfect cosmic safari.

A unique activity has been developed at Sanctuary Kusini where guests can contribute to the Serengeti Cheetah Project by monitoring the cheetah of this vast national park. Venture out into this remote region of the Serengeti with your expert guide in search of cheetah. Your guide will introduce you to the cheetah's habitat and teach you how to correctly identify and photograph the cheetah you spot and record their behaviour and location. Your contribution to the project could uncover new movement patterns and aid development of conservation programs. Since Sanctuary Kusini developed the cheetah watch activity in 2009, guests have supplied valuable information on over 60 different cheetah, many of which had not been seen for years. In recognition, the Cheetah Project has named one long-lost cheetah "Kusini".
